South Carolina Governor McMaster announced the state secured final funding for a new I-95 bridge over Lake Marion. The project, costing $350 million, received $175 million in federal funding this week.

The new 6-lane bridge is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance evacuation during hurricanes. The funding includes $105 million from federal sources and $70 million from state funds.

The urgency of bridge repairs increased after a cargo ship caused the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, killing six workers. I-95 is vital for the East Coast supply chain, carrying traffic from Maine to Florida.

Governor McMaster credited Senator Graham and Congressman Clyburn for securing the funds. The $175 million is part of a $5 billion federal investment to improve aging bridges in 16 states, announced by the Department of Transportation on July 17.
