A powerful solar storm is expected to bring the Northern Lights to the Carolinas late tonight into Tuesday morning.
Another coronal mass ejection is arriving today, following a strong solar flare from yesterday. Forecasters say the event could trigger G4-level geomagnetic storm conditions, considered severe.
The KP index is forecast to reach 8, a level that often allows aurora viewing across the Carolinas, even down into Charleston. The best chance to see the lights will be from around midnight through sunrise.
Viewing conditions look favorable. The moon sets after sunset, leaving darker skies overnight.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued an alert warning of a potentially historic geomagnetic storm. The agency says auroras could be visible as far south as Alabama, placing Charleston within range for lights in the northern sky.
The storm peaks on January 20 before weakening Tuesday. NOAA also warns of possible power grid fluctuations, satellite disruptions, and GPS interference.
If you want the best possible shots with the brightest colors, you’ll need a long-exposure camera. Go to a very dark place where you have an unobstructed view toward the northern sky.
