Charleston’s growing appeal as a tourist and business hub is driving the need for more hospitality facilities in the Lowcountry. Daniel Island is responding to this demand with the approval of a new hotel project, complete with a restaurant, event space, and guest cottages.

The Daniel Island Architectural Review Board recently gave the green light to the conceptual design of a hotel planned for 1995 Daniel Island Drive. Following this, the City of Charleston Design Review Board unanimously approved the design, with a 6-0 vote, subject to some aesthetic modifications.

The next step for the hotel involves a preliminary submission to the city’s Technical Review Committee, which is necessary before final permits can be issued.

Currently, the 1.5-acre site houses a 1,536 square-foot office building, constructed in 1996 and home to Beatty Management, a property management company. Plans are in place to demolish this existing structure to make way for the new development.

The Bellinger will feature a new restaurant and event space on the island, and will be managed by The Indigo Road Hospitality Group.

The Bellinger’s location is strategically set across from the old Blackbaud headquarters and the Old Charleston Battery soccer stadium. This area is also the planned location for Nowell Creek Village, a 320-unit multifamily apartment complex.
