The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for the Charleston region, most of the South Carolina coast, and Wilmington until at least 5 PM this evening. The primary hazard is an isolated tornado threat.
The Storm Prediction Center reports that as Tropical Storm Debby moves slowly northeastward, the risk of tornadoes will persist and shift across the watch area into eastern South Carolina and coastal North Carolina. The highest instability near the coast will support occasional supercells, increasing the tornado threat.
What a Tornado Watch Means
A Tornado Watch indicates that conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Residents should stay alert for threatening weather conditions and listen for updates and possible warnings.
Call to Action
People in the watch area should spread the word, stay informed, and be prepared to take action if severe weather approaches.
