National Hunt: North Charleston Casts Wide Net for New Police Chief

North Charleston has just announced plans that it will be widening its search for a new police chief on a national scale.

The city announced on Tuesday that Special Assistant to the Mayor, David Cheatle, would oversee the hiring process and has reached out to the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) for assistance.

PERF is the same search firm that successfully recruited the last three police chiefs for the city of Charleston.

City officials highlighted that the three deputy chiefs would be eligible to apply and engage in the selection process. Notably, Charleston utilized PERF for a national search last year but ultimately appointed an internal candidate as police chief.

This pursuit follows less than a year after Greg Gomes took over from Burgess as chief, who left to pursue the city’s mayoral position. Gomes recently announced his retirement as chief, effective June 30.

As of now, the city has not established a specific timeline for appointing Gomes’ successor.
