A new $1.697 million animal-adoption center is complete in Moncks Corner, adding space for dogs, cats and families looking for a pet. But the new facility’s doors are not opening to adopters just yet.

Berkeley County announced the construction milestone November 2. Charleston Animal Society plans to open the center after the New Year, according to the county. No specific opening day was announced.

The 5,349-square-foot addition connects to the existing shelter at 131 Central Berkeley Drive. It is the society’s Berkeley Campus, rather than its main location on Remount Road in North Charleston.

More space for animals and adopters

The new center includes 27 adoptable-dog kennels, separate cat and kitten rooms, two adoption rooms and two larger meet-and-greet rooms. The broader project also added 15 kennels to the existing building and renovated an exterior kennel area.

That gives prospective adopters dedicated spaces to meet animals, while increasing the campus’s kennel capacity. The county also reports that several departments performed work in-house to help offset additional project costs.

The facility announcement follows a year of changes at the shelter. Charleston Animal Society assumed operations July 1, 2025, under its partnership with Berkeley County.

In its first-year report, the society said euthanasia fell 43% compared with the previous year. It reported a 15% decline for dogs and a 53% decline for cats, alongside a 13% reduction in overall intake.

Those figures describe the partnership’s reported results before the new adoption center opens. They should not be read as results caused by a building that is not yet serving adopters.

Check before making an adoption trip

As of November 2, the society’s website still carries an October 22 notice pausing dog adoptions at the Berkeley Campus because of an upper respiratory outbreak. The notice says veterinary staff contained the outbreak and were treating affected animals.

That notice also says cat and kitten adoptions continued at the time it was issued. Because operating conditions can change, prospective adopters should check directly with the society before traveling. Older fee promotions in the notice should not be assumed to remain available.

The society’s adoption information page links to live animal listings and explains that availability changes as pets are cleared for adoption or go home. It says adoptable pets come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

For Charleston-area families, the expansion is a new option to watch in the neighboring county. The useful next steps are to follow the opening announcement, confirm current services and look at the animals available through the society now.

GlobalFlare has also covered the region’s need for foster families.
