Charleston Unveiling New Multi-Million Dollar John L. Dart Library Today

The John L. Dart Library in Mount Pleasant, part of the Charleston County Public Library system, reopened on Monday, January 29, following extensive renovations. The library now features new additions including a meeting room and a study room. The study room houses the Dart collection, an exclusive African American collection that is available for in-library reading but not for checkout.

In response to growing technological needs, the library has increased the number of computers available to patrons. Additionally, there are now dedicated computer stations for children, separate from those for adults. A unique feature of the Dart branch is the availability of free produce from local farmers, making it one of only three libraries in the system to offer this service.

This renovation is part of a larger initiative funded by a $108.5 million referendum passed in Charleston County in 2014.

The project aims to construct five new libraries and renovate all existing branches, with the Dart Library’s closure for renovation dating back to October 2022.
