A 29-year-old woman, Ashner Nelson, has been arrested on two counts of reckless homicide following a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two 17-year-olds in North Charleston.
The North Charleston Police Department arrested Nelson after her release from the hospital on Sept. 13.
The incident occurred on Aug. 8 when Nelson allegedly ran a red light while driving at 100 mph on Patriot Boulevard, where the speed limit is 40 mph. Nelson’s vehicle collided with a car turning left onto Patriot Boulevard, hitting the driver’s side of the teens’ car.
The impact caused the car to spin out and strike another vehicle at the intersection. The two teens, Joseph DaSilva and Samuel Oliveira, were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight on Aug. 9.
Due to Nelson’s injuries, police waited until her release from the hospital to serve the arrest warrants. She is currently held at the Dorchester County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings.
