The UFO Welcome Center, located just north of Charleston, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Firefighters from multiple departments were still addressing residual hot spots by 9 a.m.
This iconic structure was inspired by 1950s “flying saucer” designs and featured a two-story, silver-painted exterior. It measured 16 feet in height and 39 feet in diameter, constructed from lumber and fastened with wood screws and bolts.
A video from Anne-Marie Bowdoin captured the smoldering ruins of what once was a landmark in the area. Fire crews were actively managing the site around the same time, focusing on extinguishing remaining hot spots.
