A large cargo ship lost control of its engines in Charleston Harbor, nearly colliding with the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. The incident shut down the bridge in both directions.

Harbor pilots were guiding the nearly 1,000-foot ship which was moving at 20 mph toward the main support beam of the bridge.

Here is a video of the incident:

The ship eventually anchored it offshore. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident, said Randy Preston, commander of the Charleston section.

Charleston Police cleared the eight-lane bridge of traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians for 10 minutes as the ship passed underneath. The ship’s wake grounded a small boat, causing minor injuries to two people, Preston said.

The ship, registered in Liberia to Mediterranean Shipping Company, was heading to Savannah, Georgia, from Charleston’s port. The company has not commented.
