President Barack Obama included a massive surplus to the state of Georgia to drastically expand Savannah harbor in his new budget.
The White House budget request released on Monday includes $42 million for dredging the river channel cargo ships use to reach the Port of Savannah. It’s the first major construction funding proposal that we’ve seen since the $706 million project was first approved in 2012.
Workers have already started on the Savannah harbor expansion, using the initial $266 million that the state of Georgia set aside last year. The initial goal of the plan was to have Washington pay 60% of the entire project.
