South Carolina is about to break ground on the Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) project, South Carolina’s inaugural mass transit system.

With the design phase underway since January, the LCRT team is now finalizing critical components such as the precise route, station stops, bus designs, technological integrations, and station amenities, aiming to enhance the overall community infrastructure.

The new line will significantly boost job creation, improve housing accessibility, and facilitate easier movement across the Lowcountry. Charleston County has conducted five public meetings early this year to discuss various sales tax-funded projects, with the LCRT team actively participating to gather community input.

Funding for the 21-mile transit system is secure, with 60% provided by the federal government and the remaining 40% funded by the 2016 half-cent sales tax program. This financial strategy ensures that the project will not require borrowing or lead to tax increases, fully supporting the construction, operation, and maintenance of the LCRT based on community needs and federal standards.
