Mount Pleasant is now moving forward on a massive $40 million park and sports complex, with a unique minimized environmental impact.
The design by Liollio Architecture preserves grand trees and 3.6 acres of wetlands adds two playgrounds and a dog park, alongside a gymnasium with courts for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball, a dance studio, multipurpose spaces, and an esports classroom. Outdoor facilities will include sand volleyball courts, soccer fields, and tennis courts.
Purchased in 2010 by Mount Pleasant and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission for $20 million, the 245-acre project, once referred to as the “Central Park of Mount Pleasant,” is moving forward after funding was secured through a 2022 voter referendum. The referendum approved a $50 million loan for recreational projects, with $40 million designated for the Rifle Range Road Park.
With nearly 15 years of planning behind it, the project received unanimous approval from Mount Pleasant’s Health, Recreation, and Events Committee on February 5. Construction is anticipated to start in 2025 and complete in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the community’s recreational development.
