Voters across South Carolina participated in congressional, state, and county elections on Tuesday. Polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but voter turnout remained low, with less than 14% participation.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace emerged victorious, easily defeating two Republican challengers. This win secures her position for a third term. Despite facing significant campaign opposition and questions about her political career, Mace will now compete against Democrat Michael B. Moore in the general election.
The Freedom Caucus had a strong showing, with all 11 incumbents winning their Republican primaries. However, they failed to secure several other targeted seats.
The future of the bipartisan “sister senators” in South Carolina remains uncertain. One of the three Republican sister senators lost her primary, and another faces a runoff. This could significantly reduce the number of female senators in the state. The sister senators gained national recognition for opposing a near-total ban on abortion in 2023. However, their primary election outcomes may change their representation in the Statehouse.
