A mass shooting just occurred in Tampa when a gunman drove through a security fence and starting shooting in Citibank’s Tampa campus Wednesday afternoon, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

After the shooting began, an armed security guard confronted him in a cafeteria, returned fire, and fatally wounded the shooter.

The November 4 attack unfolded during lunchtime at the company’s Tampa complex, where approximately 3,200 employees were on the property. It triggered a massive emergency response and sent workers fleeing or sheltering inside the buildings.

Chief Deputy Frank Losat said the gunman drove a sedan over medians and through a secured fence into an outdoor dining area. He exited carrying a rifle and shot a woman before moving toward the cafeteria.

Dispatchers received the first reports of gunfire at 12:11 p.m. A marked sheriff’s unit arrived a minute later, and the security guard confronted the gunman at approximately 12:15 p.m., officials said. The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.

Four other people were hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities had not clarified whether those injuries resulted from gunfire, the vehicle or another part of the incident.

The sheriff’s office reported deploying 367 personnel, including specialized units. Crews spent roughly two and a half hours searching and securing the sprawling complex near Interstate 75 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

“The security guard employed by Citibank stopped the threat,” Losat said, crediting the guard with preventing further violence.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said preliminary information suggested the attack was targeted. Authorities had not released the names of the woman or gunman, established a motive or confirmed whether they knew each other.

Employees evacuated as worried relatives tried to reach loved ones and get information about the scene. Officials established a reunification location at Staybridge Suites Tampa East on North Falkenburg Road.

Citigroup said it was coordinating with law enforcement. Investigators asked anyone with information or video to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continued.
