Massive 10-Story Hotel Planned for Transforming Part of Downtown Charleston

Developers plan to build a massive hotel in downtown Charleston along Morrison Drive, aimed at tourists and locals seeking a “staycation.”

The Kimpton Hotel will feature 10-stories, 250 rooms, a rooftop restaurant, bar, and pool, along with a freestanding four-story building next to it. The developer originally planned for a 12-story building on the south side of the Ravenel Bridge but reduced it by two floors without changing the number of guests it will accommodate by extending the structure out rather than up.

The City of Charleston’s Technical Review Committee is ensuring the project meets city regulations before any development starts. They are reviewing the project’s Early Site Plan Package, which outlines the construction and potential layout of the site.

Developers propose clearing the site at Morrison Drive and Stuart Street, removing trees and vegetation for landscaping. This review marks the second assessment by the committee this year, following an initial review in April. The repetitive process involves fine-tuning project details to meet city regulations, including stormwater, traffic, and zoning.

The review committee will meet Thursday at 9 a.m. The plan will return for another review once it meets all regulations.
