Bakersfield is Warning Against Increased Phone Scams Against The Elderly

Bakersfield Phone ScamsKern County has just issued an emergency warning against an increasingly popular IRS tax scam that is targeting the elderly all over the greater Bakersfield region.

Every year thousands of senior citizens fall victim to phone scams and in some cases lose their entire life savings, or get roped into large monthly payment plans without any easy way to get out.

The new IRS phone scam will typically start with the caller claiming to be an IRS agent, telling the victim that they owe taxes and you need to pay them now through either a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. The scam artist will usually have knowledge about the victim, including possible income source, properties they own, and where they bank. The caller will often even threatened to arrest or deport the victim if they do not comply.

Kern County Aging and Adult Services wants to remind everyone that the IRS or any state agency requesting money will never call you.

No legitimate state or federal agency will ever threaten to bring local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying your taxes or any overdue fees.
