June marks the official start of hurricane season. With bad weather comes the risk of power outages. Dominion Energy officials shared their preparation strategies.
Dominion Energy serves over 800,000 people across South Carolina. Predictions indicate an active hurricane season. Power loss significantly impacts people during storms, so Dominion Energy ensures both customers and crews are prepared for the worst.
Dominion Energy employees prepare year-round for hurricane season. Trees and limbs are the number one cause of outages. The company works year-round to prevent this issue.
Throughout the year, Dominion invests in technology, equipment, infrastructure, and power lines. Crews work to safeguard lines from hazardous trees, limbs, and other vegetation. They have also added taller, more wind-resistant poles.
During storms, Dominion will restore power as long as it is safe. Even when crews cannot go out, they have ways to restore power thanks to their investments. During Hurricane Idalia, they saw around 30,000 outages. During Hurricane Ian, about 100,000 customers were impacted.
Since storm damage is unpredictable and can limit crew access, prepare by charging electronics and having flashlights, batteries, radios, and blankets ready.
