A major new ordinance for a new transportation sales tax referendum just passed its first round of votes before the Charleston County Council on Tuesday evening.

The referendum aims to allocate $5.4 billion for the improvement of county roadways.

If approved, the top transportation projects for new funding would include Maybank Highway, US-17 South, Ashley River Road, Harbor View Road, US-17 SC-61 exit ramp, Glenn McConnell overpass, Meeting Street overpass, and bike improvements on Folly Road.

The council will decide which projects will be included in the half-cent transportation sales tax increase. The referendum must pass additional votes before ultimately being placed on the ballot in November.
