port of albany craneThe Port of Albany has just spent a record $4.5 million on one of the world’s largest crains. The new crain will be able to handle over 144 tons. When combined with the other cranes, the Port of Albany can now handle loads of up to 225 tons at once.

The massive crane replaces dated construction crane from the 1970s, for the past few years, it was only to move cargo on the wharves, rather than unloading ships.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is currently in the process of dredging their harbors to accommodate much larger ships and much heavier cargoes.

The acquisition of the crane was made possible largely from a $11 million award from the state Department of Transportation.
