The Charleston Compost initiative has grown, adding six new locations for residents to dispose of their kitchen waste, bringing the total to 20 sites throughout Charleston County. Launched in 2021 with just three sites, the program aims to significantly reduce environmental impact by diverting food waste from the landfill, potentially extending its lifespan by 12 to 15 years.
Collected food scraps are processed at the compost facility located at the Charleston County Landfill and Recovery Center in West Ashley, where they transform into compost over a 12-week period. This environmentally friendly compost is then made available for the community to purchase at just $1 per bucket.
